Old oil rigs may get a new lease on life, as exotic getaway destinations for the rich and adventurous. Houston-based Morris Architects has come up with just such an idea, with a view towards putting the retired rigs in the Gulf of Mexico to good use once more.

The idea, which has already won a design competition, incorporates a white sands beach on the rooftop, a glass floor lobby and pre-fabricated guest room modules with built-in protection against hurricanes.

The entire assembly is held together by a core of water and powered by wind turbines and solar panels.

As you can see, the design also calls for a helipad and a docking area for boats.
