Tofino was appointed the best surfing town in all of North America in the 2010 Editors' Choice awards. The top rated surfing town is in Canada. Who would have thought?  The towns success ranking "has a lot to do with the fact that it's a magnificent surfing venue that was a secret for such a long time," says Sharon Lingenfelter, executive director of Tourism in Tofino.

The areas International recognition all began when the O'Neill Cold Water Classic international surfing competition got underway and surfing competitors saw Tofino resident Peter de Vries defeat nearly 140 opponents, Lingenfelter said.

 

"O'Neill was so influenced by the experience that they're definitely looking forward to returning this year, although we're still determining when that time will be," she said. Although the cool north Pacific waters may not suit everyone, but with the correct gear, surfing enthusiasts can acquire everything they're in search of, she said.
