The Beach Volleyball World Championships are through the preliminary phase. Beach volleyball pairs from Spain, Switzerland and Germany all went through to the knock-out stages in the men's beach volleyball draw, while Brazil and the US triumphed on the women's beach volleyball side.
Within the men's beach volleyball competition, Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher of Switzerland overcame their Norwegian challengers 21-19, 21-17 to advance unbeaten out of Pool D. Adrian Gavira Collado and Pablo Herrera of Spain were taken to three sets by Marcio Arau and Fabio Luiz of Brazil, before preserving their unbeaten record and securing their place in the knock-out stages with a 21-18, 18-21, 15-9 beach volleyball victory in Pool J.
Over in the women's beach volleyball event, second-seeded Brazil's Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes beat Chen Xue and Ying Zhang of China 21-14 and 21-19 in Pool B. Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs representing the United States, moved into the knock-out stage with a Pool D win over Anja Gunther and Geeske Banck of Germany.
