ALL across Miami, images of the real estate bust are on display — in the empty condominium towers, the for-sale signs and the posted foreclosure notices. But on Watson Island, a diamond-shaped piece of land between downtown Miami and South Beach, there are big plans in the works.
The developer Mehmet Bayraktar is planning the Island Gardens project — rendering below — on Watson Island between downtown Miami and South Beach. Miami officials hope the project will help establish the city as an international yachting destination. Since November, workers have been dredging the waters and building a sea wall to prepare for a deepwater marina that will be the focal point of Island Gardens, a $640 million mixed-use project being developed by the Flagstone Property Group.

RED Development LLC is gathering the support of Nevada state lawmakers for its plan to seek federal economic stimulus money for a new $80 million to $100 million arena in the Legends at Sparks Marina project.
RED, which is co-headquartered in Kansas City and Scottsdale, Ariz., was the developer of the $250 million Legends of Village West destination retail center in Kansas City, Kan. Its $500 million Legends of Sparks Marina in Sparks, Nev., was to have included a baseball stadium similar to CommunityAmerica Ballpark at Legends of Village West.
