Gulf Coast residents are breathing a sigh of relief today after yesterday's explosion and fire at an oil and gas production rig 100 miles off the Louisiana coast, an incident that initially sparked fears that the environmental and economic crisis oppressing the region in the wake of the BP catastrophe was about to become worse.
According to the coast guard, none of the 13 workers aboard Mariner Energy's rig was seriously injured, the fire has been extinguished, and early reports of a mile-long oil sheen from the area turned out to be wrong information.

The U.S. Coast Guard is encouraging Florida boaters to use extra caution over the Labor Day weekend. Coast Guard crews will be patrolling, conducting safety checks, and keeping a watch on people boating under the influence of alcohol or operating in an unsafe manner, according to the agency.
The Coast Guard urges boaters to monitor weather broadcasts and be aware of current storm updates.

According to officials, the final sealing of BP's well in the Gulf of Mexico will be postponed until after Labor Day, in order for the company to replace equipment that contributed to the wells failure.
Coast Guard Commander Thad Allen said at a briefing in Washington, that after long discussions between BP engineers and government scientists, BP had agreed to remove the damaged blowout preventer - the device that failed when the Deepwater Horizon drill rig exploded - and the new cap that was installed atop it last month.

An abandoned barge has been removed from its home one hundred yards off of Peanut Island in Palm Beach County. At nearby Riviera Beach Marina, many business owners are extremely relieved and happy to see it finally taken away.
Owner of Blue Water Power Boat Rentals, Randy Andersen said, "It has been an eyesore and whats more is that it will now open the channel up a little bit because it tends to get very congested, particularly on the weekends when there's a lot of boat traffic.

While oil spill cleanup continues, and over last weekend President Obama and family visited Panama Beach, Florida to get a firsthand look at recovery in the Gulf. President Obama spoke at the Coast Guard base reassuring the nation that oil recovery efforts were well underway.
In addition, the Florida Fish and Wildlife announced that they were concluding the sea turtle eggs relocation program in two Florida counties: Franklin and Gulf.
