APTOPIX_Missing_Boaters_MH1_t607After their boat had capsized and were thrown into the extremely cold waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and realizing they had strained all options of rescue, the four football players held on to one another on their overturned vessel to stay alive.

One year later, the sole survivor of last February's deadly fishing trip shares his horrific details of that and remaining moments in his book, Not Without Hope, by Nick Schuyler.

The four of us huddled together, trying desperately to stay warm as the evening turned into night. I thought for a second it was bit strange for four grown men to be clustered together like new pups, although necessary in order to maintain any kind of body heat. I could hear everyone's teeth chatter and feel them shivering all over. At one point when all was quiet and realizing how bad our situation really was, I told them how much i loved them. 25 yr. old Schuyler stayed silent for months after the incident even despite the coast guard and media attention that came with his fortunate rescue on March 2. Prior to his book, he revealed his story with the public, but only once, during an episode of HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. His story accounted for all major points of the accident involving the South Florida football players Schuyler, then 24, Marquis Cooper, 26, Will Bleakley, 25 and Corey Smith age 29.

Concluding the fishing day, located 70 miles off the coast of Clearwater in Cooper's 21-foot boat, they were trying to raise the anchor, but had become lodged. Rather than cutting the anchor's line, they gunned the engine, resulting in the boat filling up with water causing it to overturn. the morning hours presented Cooper with extreme signs of hypothermia, a short while later, Smith was in the identical state. Schuyler described their words as slurred and saying things that didn't make any sense. Schuyler held tightly onto Cooper as he died but then had to let release Cooper's body when Smith became uncontrollable. A short time later Smith also died. Schuyler at that point remained with his best friend, Bleakley, who had drowned during a second night at sea. He watched his best friend drift away, then he began to experience his own mind and body slowly slipping away, before a Coast Guard rescued him 18 hours later.

His book, written by Jere Longman- New York Times sportswriter, tells of the horrific story in 246 pages of graphic detail, from Schuyler's perspective, included memories from his family, doctor, reports from the Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and some from the St. Petersburg Times. The book goes on sale Tuesday, the one-year anniversary of the Coast Guard rescue of Schuyler and the date on best friend Bleakley's death certificate. Describing the last shocking hours of their lives in a way the public is unfamiliar, including Schuyler's many frustrating attempts to phone for help, seeing only the cell phone message "connecting . . . forever. Schuyler tells of plummeting hopes as helicopters approach the area and fly away, unable to see the men. Schuyler's representatives say he cannot further comment on the book until its release. People magazine will receive the first print interview. Oprah will receive the next television appearance.
