Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar has moved further towards final confirmation. The total prize money on next year's premier international Beach Volleyball tour is set to be US$7.7 million, with the highlight of the year the US$1 million SWATCH FIVB Men's and Women's World Championships presented by ConocoPhillips.
After six months of candidatures and negotiations, the FIVB has maintained similar figures to 2008 in terms of number of events and prize money and retained many prestigious hosts in spite of the global financial crisis. In light of this crisis, certain promoters have been given more time to make a final decision on hosting a World Tour event in 2009 and these pending issues on the calendar are set to be resolved in January.
To date, there are expected to be a total of 18 women's tournaments and 15 men's tournaments in 2009. The SWATCH FIVB World Tour curtain-raiser is scheduled to be a double-gender event in Brazil's capital city of Brasilia through April 14-19, with a women's Open event in Phuket, Thailand, through November 4-8 scheduled to bring the calendar to a close. The SWATCH FIVB World Championships will take place in Stavanger, Norway, through June 25 to July 5.
