On Tuesday emerging from the surf off Hilton Head Island's Coligny Beach was a 9 foot alligator, shocking hundreds of people who opted to stick around to see the reptile captured by local wranglers.
The surfing gator was spotted by two people swimming and lifeguards around 1:15 p.m., forcing hundreds of people out of the water, said director of operations for Critter Management Inc. Billy Karijanian.

Saturday saw hundreds of people joining hands on the Yacht Club Beach, a statement of unity protesting offshore drilling, but promoting the use of alternative and green energy sources.
The "Hands Across the Sand" event was held at 800 beaches across the nation. Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, and Bonita Springs were among the communities that joined the Cape representing opposition against British Petroleum and the rampant disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

While oil washes up along the shore in the Gulf region many vacation rentals are getting some steep discounts. some property managers are offering as much as 30 to 50 per cent discounts on beach houses and condominium units and.
Cancellations have been on the rise and an ongoing struggle to fill the properties. According to David Bodenhamer, a partner in Young's Suncoast Vacation Rentals in Gulf Shores, says they have undergone $220,000 in cancellations in only three days and that they are running at less than a 50 per cent occupancy.

On Wednesday, Bay County authorities arrested as many as 11 people, all but one of them believed to be illegal aliens - in a sweep at Panama City Marina, a staging location for BP contracted workers loading oil booms onto boats.
According to sheriff's spokeswoman Ruth Corley, the agency plans to release the names of the suspects today. There were 10 people charged with illegal use of personal identification and one male arrested on a local warrant for battery charges.

Chilean security authorities are cracking down on looters today, as victims of the weekends enormous quake near Concepcion wait for food and supplies to be delivered to them. A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake had struck Chile on Saturday morning, killing over 700 people and destroying a half-million homes countrywide. The grounds of Concepcion began shaking at 3:34 a.m. on Saturday lasting just 90 seconds, but caused widespread damage. 500 kilometres north of Concepcion, in the Chilean capital of Santiago, bridges and buildings were damaged.
