The massive $500 million dollar expansion project at the Museum of Fine Arts hits a vital milestone this week. Followed by years of designing, construction and fundraising, the first of its 53 galleries is being installed in the new Art of the Americas Wing. It's housing is dedicated to minutely detailed ship models.
The USS Constitution along with other 18th and early 19th century warships and merchant vessels are amongst the collection appearing identical to the real thing , only smaller - with tiny sails and masts. Even miniature pieces of furniture, weapons and cargo.

Nathanael Greene Herreshoff was one of the world's sovereign boat builders at the turn of the 20th century, building creative yachts that dominated decades of the America's Cup sailing competitions. Herreshoff, who passed away in 1938, designed boats by starting with model hulls formed from blocks of wood rather than first creating lines plans, two-dimensional architectural drawings that reflect the shape of the hull and can suggest a boats performance, speed and seaworthiness.
Will Sofrin, a licensed captain and artist is currently filling the gap. Sofrin utilizes original design data of the boats owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop construction plans for two dozen of Herreshoff's most praised yacht designs - despite the fact of angering Herreshoff's grandson.

Billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased 35 contemporary art pieces for his luxury mega yacht, "Eclipse," an art dealer disclosed. The art purchases came through Terence Disdale, who designs the interiors of Abramovich's yachts, says Joseph Clarke, director of Millennium, whose gallery is in southwest England.
Abramovich, Chelsea soccer club owner, doesn't discuss his art purchases. His collecting, with his partner Dasha Zhukova, has enhanced prices at some sales -- and renewed purchasing could aid market confidence, said dealers. "Amongst the major collectors, he's low key," says the London-based art and design dealer Kenny Schachter.
