A tax cut on sales of boats valued over $300,000 was approved by the Florida House on April 6th by a 79-36 vote that divided the Palm Beach County Democrats. Supporters argued that the break, which caps sales tax bills on boat purchases at $18,000, is designed to help boat builders, who Republicans said are progressively leaving the state.
The bill is the "Florida Maritime Full Employment Act" and a corresponding Senate bill includes the same cap on plane purchases. Naples R- Rep. Tom Grady, argued that his bill could properly be called a tax break.

US president Barack Obama has angered the US boating industry after stating some rather criticizing comments in reguards to boat buying during a New Hampshire based speech."When times get tough, you tighten your belts.
You don't pursue boat buying when you can barely pay your mortgage," the president said in the speech announcing his Small Business Lending Initiative."You don't go out and blow large sums of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college.

During a four-year research of Florida's registered boat owners and what their spending dictates for the state's economy revealed that Florida's boaters bring in over $8.5 billion annually, according to a Dec. 30, 2009, report.
The study was conducted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) who examined 2007 boating trips and vessel-related spending of registered boaters in various regions throughout Florida. The study revealed that Florida boat owners spent $3.4 billion on boat trips in 2007 and $5.1 billion for marina expenses, repairs and other fees not associated with specific boat trips.
