The Loggerhead sea turtle species are not doing well, population-wise. They are currently being considered for listing as "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act. Last week, a proposal was made by the National Marine Fisheries Service and Fish and Wildlife Service to change the status of both the U.S. North Pacific and Northwest Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles from "threatened" to "endangered."
The government also proposed listing loggerhead sea turtles around the world as nine separate populations, each having its own threatened or endangered status. "The proposed change constitutes a turning point in our ability to protect loggerhead sea turtles," says Biological attorney, Andrea Treece.
